Way to go Chus and Russell Peters

Thursday, July 16th, 2009 by Kwan Ng

Steven Chu is the United States energy secretary who has just returned from his first official visit to China. Judy Chu just became the first Chinese-American woman in Congress today. Way to go Chus. They aren’t related, they just happen to have the same name. Even the woman Judy Chu beat in the election to get to the position was also a Chu. Steven Chu and his associate Mr. Locke chilled with experts and officials in China to discuss energy. He’s actually so impressed with their advancements and strategies that he thinks it’s quite possible that China could catch up and possibly surpass the United States on that front. There ya go! A little more relevant, Asian American working for his country.

Now here’s some fun stuff, Russell Peters is a Canadian of Indian descent who works as a stand up comedian.  Peters does a lot of jokes and comedy about racial stereotypes and multicultural relations, using many satirical accents.  He’s extremely popular in Canada and the United States, selling an impressive amount of tickets for a comedian.

Microsoft’s ad campaigns result in Apple’s legal team crying foul

Thursday, July 16th, 2009 by Jie Liu

As we all know, the constant battle between the OS industry’s biggest players, specifically Microsoft and Apple, is a never-ending saga.  Microsoft’s recent advertisement campaigns promoted the idea that PCs are a better bang for your buck and Macs are just too expensive.

Laptops under $1000; “You find it, you keep it”

Kevin Turner, Microsoft’s chief operating officer, apparently received a call from Apple’s legal department requesting to have the ad pulled out, giving the reason that they had lowered their price by $100.

And you know why I know they’re working? Because two weeks ago we got a call from the Apple legal department saying, hey — this is a true story — saying, “Hey, you need to stop running those ads, we lowered our prices.” They took like $100 off or something. It was the greatest single phone call in the history that I’ve ever taken in business.

Does a difference of $100 really make the ad irrelevant? My opinion – No! I failed to see any legal or sensible reasoning behind their request.  In fact, I found myself slightly amused after reading this. “All is fair in love and war.” I have to admit, I’m a PC

To balance the “fairness” boat a little; here’s a compilation of Apple ads attacking Microsoft.

Being an Asian American Advertising agency, we all know how powerful well-thought out and cleverly planned ads can promote your business and/or demote your competitors’.  Advertising is a competitive industry and ads that attack the competitor is common and almost second nature. Should Microsoft pull out the ad because of a $100 price adjustment? My advice to Apple: “Get over it! Come up with something better.”

Of The Strike Master And Congress

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009 by Kwan Ng
Here’s a shout out (text out?) to my boy Michael Swenson. He pitched 7 innings for the win at the Senior Babe Ruth Tournament in Greenwich, Connecticut. His team, Rink and Racket, are champions for two consecutive years. Swenson’s baseball season is far from over. He’s been recruited to the Greenwich All-Star team, to play in a few Connecticut-wide tournaments, and is planning on continuing his hot streak on the mound, infield, and at bat. The title doesn’t refer to his baseball prowess but his bowling talents. During the winter Mike also led the Varsity Bowling team to the State Finals. He’s pretty darn good at bowling.

Big news: Hilda Solis left a seat open in Congress when she left to become Obama’s Labor Secretary: 2 front runners for her position from the state of California were Judy Chu (Democrat), and Betty Chu (Republican). 62% voted for the Democrat, and on Thursday she’ll be flown into D.C., to be sworn in. Actually what’s really odd is that they’re cousins through marriage. Why is this big news? She’s the first Chinese American woman to be elected to Congress. The times are a-changing, eh?

Charice: Most marketable Filipino now?

Who’s the next most marketable Filipino in the U.S.? It may soon be a toss-up between boxer Manny Pacquiao and Charice Pempengco (now only going by her first name). Charice is a first-generation Filipino who has both mothers (first generation) and their daughters (second generation) as her captive audience. The 16-year-old singer belts out songs enjoyed by mothers–pop ballads performed by Celine Dion, Whitney Houston and more recently, Jennifer Hudson.

Being in the entertainment business gives Charice an edge. She was reportedly scheduled to perform with Michael Jackson in the singer’s planned comeback concert in London, if not for his untimely demise, according to ABS-CBN, a Philippine media conglomerate.

Who is Charice? Charice was discovered on Youtube by Ellen De Generes. The Youtube video featured her singing in a South Korean talent show, “Star King” held on Oct. 13, 2007. De Generes was impressed by her performance that the TV host invited the then-15-year-old girl to perform in her show. Charice flew to the United States for the first time and performed two songs in the December 19, 2007 show.

Oprah Winfrey took notice and invited her to perform in the Oprah show on May 12, 2009. Oprah then recommended her to music producer David Foster who took Charice under his tutelage. Since then, she has performed with Andrea Bocelli, Celine Dion and other international singers in concerts and sporting events with more than 50,000 people. The third time Charice made an appearance on Oprah she debuted her first internationally released single “Note to God” (click on video in image). It debuted no. 24 on Billboard.

For immigrants, they recognize and acknowledge young Filipino-American performers and showbiz personalities like Vanessa Hudgens of “High School Musical”. But when a fellow recent immigrant makes it big, that’s when Filipinos really pay close attention. Lea Salonga was the first Filipino immigrant who crossed the cultural divide as an award-winning Broadway singer and as Disney’s singing voice in several movies, including “Aladdin.” Now it looks like Charice is going to be the next big Filipino singer, if she stays relevant. But with Oprah as no. 1 patron, she may just become prime time.

While she has more videos on Youtube, the one embedded here is an Oprah exclusive.

Wild Wild West

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009 by Kwan Ng

You must remember that movie made in 1999, with Will Smith and Kevin Kline, along with the promotional song with same title, neither of which were very good, but were amusing at the very least. “When I roll into the (Wild Wild West). When I stroll into the (Wild Wild West). When I bounce into the (Wild Wild West).” It’s time to shift this topic into a more relevant one. I don’t want to get too far off track like most of the other entries.

Western Union, a prominent client of New-A, has been widely known in the U.S. for its telegram service until advancements in technology made them switch to another business model. Now with more than 350,000 locations in over 240 countries and territories, Western Union specializes in money transfer, money orders and other commercial services.

I’m only giving this tidbit because until a day ago, I didn’t know what type of business it’s in. Yes, that’s right, reading this blog can actually teach you things. Like, did you know that the Scottish National Flag, St. Andrew’s Cross, is technically the oldest national flag still in use? It goes back to the 9th century. Here’s another fact: Today, July 14th, is a national holiday in France. It’s Bastille Day. The French celebrate the storming of the Bastille, and French independence.

Back to Western Union: It’s only logical that it advertises more to foreigners in the U.S. because its main service is transferring money to almost any location in the world, which is exactly what many Asian Americans do. They send money to friends and, most important, family back home. Advertising in-language for their major niches is a solid idea, and will definitely increase business in a declining economy.

Weak start for ‘Entourage’ but still darn enjoyable to watch

Monday, July 13th, 2009 by Kwan Ng

Season 6 of Markie Mark’s (Mark Wahlberg) HBO (Home Box Office) hit, “Entourage” premiered last night. The main cast returns:
Vince-Adrian Grenier
Drama-Kevin Dillon
Eric-Kevin Connolly
Turtle-Jerry Ferrara
Ari-Jeremy Piven

While this first episode was actually not a very strong start to the show, this behind-the-scenes Hollywood series was welcomed by viewers anyway. The gang is just so darn enjoyable to watch. However, the only decent plot in the episode has to be Lloyd’s (Rex Lee) pushing to get a promotion from Ari. The rest of the show was surprisingly boring, consisting of simple one liners and lame comebacks.

In other news, Eun-Hee Ji of South Korea sunk a 20-foot putt on the 18th hole for birdie to win the LPGA tournament at the Saucon Valley Country Club yesterday. While I did not personally see the coverage of the match, I hear that Ji put on a quite a show getting birdie on 3 of her final 6 holes.

What’s Your F*C* Doing On Your Shirt?

Friday, July 10th, 2009 by Kwan Ng

Now if you thought I swearing with those asterisks, you sir, are thoroughly mistaken. It just stands for face which is a basic component ofr the new t-shirt project. Let me back up. Okay, like 15 entries ago I talked about eCommerce and how we’re going to try and implement that into the site, to make some extra cash, brand Admerasia, and try all sorts of cool stuff. Just the last entry I showed you some cool flash drive concepts, and here’s another idea presented; T-shirts. Again our creative department let their minds roam without a leash, and they came up with some pretty crazy ideas.

A simple concept design with Admerasia, and a group of staff photos on the back. A cheap generic idea.
Another pretty simple idea with the phrase, “I am AdmerAsia n”. Cute, they also took some pictures of people and threw them into the bottom.
Here’s the Admerasia logo vertically done on the right side of the shirt and then pictures of people’s eyes and upper part of their head in the frame.
This plan has a basic Admerasia logo across the chest, but a larger full facial picture of the wearer that stretches around the left side, visible from the front and left.
As cool as it would be to utilize some of these designs, it’s kind of illogical because of the designs. A single t-shirt with one of these full screen prints is around $300!! The price is so expensive because it’s insane to set up the entire process for such a large graphic and only order 1. Too even make the prices sellable we’d have to bulk order a ridiculous amount in an effort to lower the price to around $15. Because of these restraints I think we’ll end up with one of the more generic ideas, and simpler designs, but hey it was cool to see them, wasn’t it?

Congrats to Yi Ping!

Thursday, July 9th, 2009 by ADMStaff

runYPAdmerasia congratulates Yi Ping Lee, SVP/Account Director par excellence of Admerasia, in his highly anticipated banquet wedding to lovely Stella in  Shanghai, China on July 18.

After the grandeur of the Beijing Olympics, there has been no other event that has excited and thrilled the Admerasia staff until the news of Yi Ping’s upcoming nuptials.

To our recollection, Yi Ping has been carrying the torch for Stella for  many years now.  He will take that torch of love from New York to Shanghai, China starting this week to  give him time to prepare for the wedding, which we think will be a lavish one with fireworks to beat all Chinese fireworks (that’s the Honeymoon part).

As Yiping often calls this blogger  “Yes,” in his Filipino language (much like the campaign they work with), here’s all of us at Admerasia, saying, “Yes!” We wish you and Stella all the best!

What is her last name, Yi Ping?

Flashdrives: ADM #1

Thursday, July 9th, 2009 by Kwan Ng

Admerasia’s creative department has fabricated some ideas for the flash drives for promotiomal usage, and possibly for sale. We’ve got a bunch of face ideas (cause the staff here is the most important thing):
-Sticker Faces:

-Magnet Faces:

-That Thingy; that when you tilt it you can see another picture:

Here’s one built out of a spongy gel type material that seems fun:

Another cool concept is a customizable person:

A Da Vinci Code style code breaker type of USB thing (my personal favorite):
